Manipur goes to third and final phase of polling tomorrow

Imphal, Feb 21 (UNI) Stage is set for the third and final phase of polling in Manipur as more than 3.5 lakh voters, including nearly two lakh women, are expected to exercise their franchise to elect 12 Assembly members in three districts and a sub-division tomorrow.

Massive security arrangements have been made to ensure incident free voting as poll personnel in many sensitive booths were being escorted by the policemen.

Manipur has already witnessed two phased polling on February 8 and 17 for 48 Assembly constituencies of the state's 60-member Legislative Assembly.

Manipur's Chief Electoral Officer R R Rashmi said the third phase of election would be held at Tamenglong, Chandel and Churachandpur districts and the Jiribam sub-division. He said the last phase polling is comparatively difficult as over 100 centers have no proper roads to the polling booths.

Boats and helicopters were pressed into service to move the election materials to such polling stations.

Armed security personnel would stand guard at every polling centre, he added.

Meanwhile, the outlawed NSCN-K has banned all candidates in Tamenglong Assembly Constituency from contesting the election alleging interference by its rival faction NSCN-IM.

The fates of State Congress president Gaikhangam, Tribal development minister Phungzathang Tonsing, Information Minister T.N.Haokip, and Mr Th Devendra--the number two man in the Okram Ibobi government, will be decided tomorrow.

There are also two women candidates among the constestants.

Chandel has the maximum of ten candidates while Singhat has only three.

Indian National Congress is contesting in 11 seats. LJSP-9, RJD-6 National Congress Party in 5 and Samajwadi Party-5.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has three candidates, Communist Party of India- 4, Manipur People's Party (MPP)- 3, NPP-3, SAP-2, JD (U)-1, PDA-1 and Independents-23.

Arunachal govt to hike royalty on timber, forest produces

UP polls: Change of guard of top bureaucrats in the offing

Lucknow, Feb 22 (UNI) With the announcement of the seven-phased Uttar Pradesh assembly polls yesterday, the Election Commission(EC) is set to effect some major changes in the bureaucratic and police machinery to ensure free and fair polling in the state. Earlier, the Chief election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy had hinted during his last visit to UP that the commission might effect some changes in the highest echelons of state officials after declaration of the polls. Election to Bajpur seat to be held on March 25

Dehra Dun, Feb 22 (UNI) Notification was issued today for the Bajpur Assembly seat election in Uttarakhand slated to be held on March 25. The Bajpur poll was deferred following the demise of Congress candidate Janakraj Sharma on February 18, just three days before the Assembly election, said Bajpur Returning Officer K S Bisht.
