Lankan navy seeks India's permission to interrogate LTTE cadres

Colombo, Feb 22 (UNI) The Sri Lankan Navy has requested Indian authorities to grant them permission to participate in the interrogation process of three suspected LTTE cadres, arrested by the Indian Coast Guard last week off the Indian sea while transporting arms and ammunition to Northern Sri Lanka.

''Through the Ministry of Defence, we have requested the Indian High Commission here to allow us to participate in the interrogation of the three LTTE cadres arrested by the Indian Coast Guard,'' a top naval official said.

The suspected LTTE boat was reportedly carrying a substantial quantity of explosives, including a T-56 assault riffle, five grenades, one suicide vest, barrels of ammonia and chemicals and was destroyed in the high seas off Chennai by the Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday after a week long detention.

''We now await a positive response from the Indian authorities,'' the Naval official said.

Sri Lanka's Defence Spokesman and Minister of Foreign Employment, Keheliya Rambukwella had urged India to take 'more action' to control LTTE activities in the region.

Chargesheets against 17 officers without govt permission

Bhopal, Mar 14 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today informed the Assembly that chargesheets have been submitted in courts against 17 government officials in the state in the past two years. In a written reply to Mr Girija Shankar Sharma (BJP), Mr Chouhan said Lokayukta Special Police Establishment submitted chargesheets against the then minister Jugal Kishore Bagri and another senior officer without the government's permission. However, he admitted that the Hoshangabad Collector had sought approval from the government.....

Russia, US to boost cooperation on strategic matters

Moscow, Feb 22 (UNI) Russia and the United States today urged for intensive cooperation in the fight against international terrorism, settling regional crises and strengthening the non-proliferation regime. Census of Mudhumalai Park to be completed by March 18

Chennai, Mar 14 (UNI) The seven-days general census of Mudhumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, undertaken by the Wildlife Department, would be completed by March 18. Wildlife Department sources said a training programme was also held in Theppakadu, as part of the census. Though as many as 148 volunteers came forward to assist, only 32 were selected for taking the census of the park, which was spread over 271 sqkm. Around 70 forest officers.....
