Guv suggests against convocations in UP varsities

Lucknow, Feb 22 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh governor T V Rajeswar has directed the Uttar Pradesh government not to hold convocation ceremonies in six state universities.

In a letter to the state government, Mr Rajeswar without giving any specific reason, suggested the convocation of these varsities could be held between October and December 2007.

It is learnt that due to the impending UP assembly poll, the Raj Bhawan has suggested the postponement of convocations.

The convocation functions of Lucknow, Agra, Jhansi, Faizabad, Meerut and King George Dental University (KGDU) were slated in the next couple of months.

Funeral of six boat victims held

Kochi, Feb 22 (UNI) Emotions ran high as the funeral rites for the six boat accident victims were performed at Elavoor, in the district today. The funeral of teacher Lizi, students Sibin and Maria was held at the St Antony's Church and the cremation of Aswathy, Amrita and Anjana was performed at their house compound. Eighteen people, including 15 school children and three teachers, met a watery grave when their boat capsized in Ovungal Kadavu in the Periyar river. The funeral.....

Budget Session in Kerala begins Mar 2

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 22 (UNI) The Budget for the next fiscal in Kerala will be presented in the State Assembly by Finance Minister Thomas Issac on March nine. An official release here said the 20-day Budget Session would begin on March two with a customary address by Governor R L Bhatia. Vote on Account for the first four months of the year 2006-07 would also be presented. Three days would be devoted to the general discussion on the budget while Vote on.....

Tight security for Kalam's visit

Chennai, Feb 22 (UNI) Police have made tight security arrangements in the city, Coimbatore and Nilgiris in view of President A P J Abdul Kalam's two-day visit to Tamil Nadu beginning tomorrow. Police sources said about 3,000 security personnel would be deployed in the city with similar number in Coimbatore and about 1,500 in Nilgiris.
