Diggy says a united Cong will fight for Gwalior

Gwalior, Feb 22 (UNI) All India Congress Committee General Secretary and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh, who has been in the news for his alleged differences of opinion with Guna's Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, today said that the March 8 Gwalior parliamentary constituency bypoll would be contested and won unitedly by the party.

''Media have created these so-called differences of opinion while we are toiling unitedly under the leadership of Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Just like party members unitedly defeated (senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader) Atal Bihari Vajpayee when he contested against Mr Madhavrao Scindia, we will emerge victorious,'' he told journalists here while BJP leader Rajeev Kaurav entered the Congress fold.

Mr Singh expressed confidence that Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia and all other senior Congress leaders of the state would make every possible attempt to ensure a victory.

''This fight is not about ego and family but about principles.

Anyway, the Scindia family's patriarch is part of the Congress,'' he said in response to a question about the BJP fielding state Tourism and Sports Minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia for the same seat.

Accusing the BJP of spreading communal discord as part of a strategy, the Congress bigwig expressed apprehension about differences being created during the Festival of Colours.

''The Congress has always cared for minorities' interests and I urge them not to allow the BJP's designs to succeeed,'' Mr Singh added.
