Bomb hoax creates panic in Srinagar

Srinagar, Feb 22 (UNI) Panic gripped the busy Jehangir Chowk, near here, when rumours spread that a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was planted in a suitcase.

The area was immediately cordoned off and traffic on the road leading to civil secretariat was stopped.

With memories of October 1, 2001 blast, which claimed 45 lives, at the main gate of nearby Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Complex, still afresh in the minds of people, all the shopkeepers and others present in the area ran for safety.

Eyewitnesses said when bomb disposal squad experts opened the suitcase, only few cloths were found inside it.

Traffic also resumed on the road after an hour, official sources said.

Guv suggests against convocations in UP varsities

Lucknow, Feb 22 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh governor T V Rajeswar has directed the Uttar Pradesh government not to hold convocation ceremonies in six state universities. In a letter to the state government, Mr Rajeswar without giving any specific reason, suggested the convocation of these varsities could be held between October and December 2007. Christians to move court against Freedom of Religion Act

Shimla, Feb 22 (UNI) A Christian organisation today threatened to challenge in the High Court the recently enacted Freedom of Religion Act, 2006, by the Himachal Pradesh Government, saying it was a crude attempt to curtail freedom of faith. AP House adjourned over 'Margadarsi', Muslim reservation

Hyderabad, Feb 22 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Assembly was today adjourned without transacting any business as the opposition parties stalled the proceedings on the issue of the raids on Margadarsi Financiers, seen as an alleged attack on press freedom, and on the reported move to scale down the Muslim Reservation in Government jobs and educational institutions.
