AP House adjourned over 'Margadarsi', Muslim reservation

Hyderabad, Feb 22 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Assembly was today adjourned without transacting any business as the opposition parties stalled the proceedings on the issue of the raids on Margadarsi Financiers, seen as an alleged attack on press freedom, and on the reported move to scale down the Muslim Reservation in Government jobs and educational institutions.

The trouble started as soon as the House assembled for the day as Speaker K R Suresh Reddy announced that he was disallowing the adjournment motion notice of the TDP, TRS, CPI, CPI(M) and BJP on the Margadarsi issue, and the AIMIM on the Muslim Reservation issue.

Following this, the opposition members disrupted the proceedings, forcing the Speaker to announce the adjournment for over 15 minutes.

When the House reassembled after more than one hour, the opposition TDP, TRS, CPI, CPI(M) and BJP persisted that it immediately take up discussion on the raids on Margadarsi Financiers owned by media baron Ramoji Rao, alleging that it amounted to ''attack on press freedom''.

Irate AIMIM members rushed to Speaker's podium pressing for setting aside regular business and demanded an immediate discussion on Information Minister Mohd Ali Shabeer's reported statement that the Government was contemplating to reduce the quantum of Reservation to four from five per cent in consultation with legal experts to adhere to the Supreme Court's guidelines on the issue.

The Speaker pleaded the members to resume their seats, saying the Government has agreed for a discussion on the 'Margadarsi' issue tomorrow and to place a statement on the Reservation in jobs and education.

However, the unrelenting Opposition members continued to raise slogans against the Government for its 'dictatorial' attitude and ''anti-minority'' stand on the Reservation issue.

Seeing no sign of normalcy being restored, the Speaker adjourned the House till tomorrow, without taking up the listed business, for the first time in the current Budget session.
