39 tehsils drought-hit in MP

Bhopal, Feb 22 (UNI) Thirty-nine tehsils spread over nine districts of Madhya Pradesh have been declared drought-hit.

In a written reply to Mr Ajay Singh (Congress), Revenue Minister Kamal Patel said in the Assembly today that employment-oriented relief work was underway.

''The state's food grain production was 159.5 lakh tonnes and 142.9 lakh tonnes in 2003-04 and 2004-05 respectively,'' Agriculture Minister Chaudhry Chandrabhan Singh said resonding to a query by Mr Sajjan Singh Verma (Congress).

Thus, there has been a decline of 10.4 per cent, mainly due to 21 districts being drought-affected.

Congress wants prez rule in UP in view of presidential elections

MP Cabinet fixes tendu rate

Bhopal, Feb 22 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet today decided to fix Rs 450 as the rate per standard sack of tendu leaf for 2007, sources said. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made such an assurance at a recent 'van (forest) panchayat' here. The earlier rate was Rs 400. Inspection, admission and construction matters pertaining to private Bachelor of Education colleges would be henceforth looked after by the Higher Education Department instead of the School Education Department. Oppn leader urges for holding Chairman's election

Bangalore, Feb 21 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council H K Patil today urged the State Government to hold election to the Council Chairman's post immediately in view of the ''message'' sent by Governor T N Chaturvedi to the Legislature Secretary directing to conduct the election.
