POTA detenue's allege harassment by police

Chennai, Feb 21 (UNI) Three POTA detenues, including two women who were allegedly subjected to harassment by a woman sub-inspector of police last night have demanded legal action against her.

Ms Ramani, one of the POTA detenu told newsmen here today that she and her colleagues Ms Ananthi and Suresh were detained under POTA a couple of years back and were released on bail.

They used to mark their presence in the POTA Court at suburban Poonmalee every month. After one such visit to the court last night, they were waiting at the Koyambedu city bus terminal to catch a bus to M G R Nagar in the city.

She said while two of the detenue went to a phone booth and she was standing alone at the bus terminal, the woman police official Ms Selvakumari approached her and questioned her why she was standing there. She also started abusing her before she could reply.

She said the woman police official also threatened her that she would book her for immoral trafficking. Following this a quarrel ensued. Meanwhile, a group of policemen in mufti came there and joined the women police official and started beating her and the other detenues who had returned to the bus stop. The cops also forcibly removed them to the police station.

However, on information the detenue's lawyers came to the police station and rescued them, she said.

She said the detenue would file a case against the erring woman police official before the Human Rights Commission and Madras High Court.

Police arrest agitating CPM workers

Puducherry, Feb 26 (UNI) The volunteers of CPI (M), including secretary Perumal and Tamil Nadu State Council member T Murugan, were arrested while staging separate road blockades in Puducherry and Karaikal to press their demands. The agitators demanded, among other things, curbing of price hike of essential commodities, provision of 14 essential commodities through ration shops and the procurement of farm produce directly by the government. Meanwhile, 162 persons were arrested following a road blockade against the setting up of satellite.....

Search on in J'khand, Bihar, WB to nab kidnappers

Bokaro, Feb 22 (UNI) Police have intensified joint search operations in neighbouring Bihar and West Bengal to nab criminals involved in the abduction of an iron trader from Jharkhand. Superintendent of Police Priya Dubey said random raids were also being conducted in the sensitive places of the state. Refusing to divulge details about the progress made so far by the police in this case, the SP asserted that the raids yielded certain vital leads, which would help solve the case.....

Co-operative Banks, Societies to generate Rs 600 cr

Kozhikode, Feb 26 (UNI) The Rs 30,000 crore Co-operative Banks and Societies in Kerala would mop up an additional Rs 600 crore for development activities through a special campaign during the fiscal 2007-2008. The amount, to be generated by the 28th Co-operative Deposit Collection Campaign would be utilised for the overall development of the state, Reception Committee Chairman M Mehboob told reporters here today.
