Most Bollywood greats look down on objective cinema: Shah

Bhopal, Feb 21 (UNI) Bollywod Director Kundan Shah feels that most leading actors, producers and directors in the Mumbai film industry are so conscious of their own ''greatness'' that they look down on parallel and objective cinema.

''Despite that, introspection taking place in Bollywood has led to some meaningful films. It is a fact that cinema is market-controlled and market forces see profit as the foremost priority,'' Shah told UNI while attending a documentary film fest in this City of Lakes.

In the eighties, Shah fired a broadside at the ''system'' through his lacerating satire 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron'. ''At present, I have a script that highlights the anomalies of the political machinery and would like to begin working on it soon,'' he added.

Expressing regret over the paltry number of Hindi movies based on literature, the director pointed out that film buffs actually liked such creations.

''However, certain powerful persons in the sector have come to believe that such movies do not come under the category of popular cinema. I have no inhibition about working for the small screen,'' said Shah who was associated with directing popular series such as 'Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi', 'Nukkad' and 'Circus'. He recently created a telefilm for a private channel.

Shah praised Shahrukh 'King' Khan as an energetic and capable actor.
