Election campaign for third phase concludes today

Imphal, Feb 21 (UNI) Massive security arrangements have been made for the third and final phase of elections in Manipur on February 23, as campaigning ends at 1530 hours today.

Chief Electoral Officer R R Rashmi said the third phase of elections would be held at Tamenglong, Chandel and Churachandpur districts. Twelve Assembly segments under Jiribam sub-division will witness the most difficult voting as more than 100 polling centers have no proper roads, he stated.

The CEO said boats and helicopters will be pressed into service to move the election materials to the polling stations and added that every polling station will be guarded by armed security personnel.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the NSCN-K, has banned all candidates in Tamenglong Assembly Constituency from contesting the Ninth Manipur Legislative Assembly Election alleging interference by NSCN-IM.

The fates of Congress President Gaikhangam, Tribal development minister Phungzathang Tonsing, Information Minister T.N.Haokip, and Mr Th Devendra- the number two man in the O.Ibobi government, will be decided in the last phase of election.

There are also two women candidates.

Chandel has the maximum of ten candidates while Singhat has only three. A total of 3,63,345 voters, including 1,85,598 female, would exercise their right to vote.

Indian National Congress is contesting in 11 seats. LJSP-9, RJD-6 National Congress Party in 5 and Samajwadi Party-5.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has three candidates, Communist Party of India- 4, Manipur People's Party (MPP)- 3 , NPP-3 , SAP-2, JD(U)-1, PDA-1 and Independents-23.

BJP ahead of others in Uttarakhand, according to exit poll

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) BJP has emerged as the most likely party to form government in the hill state of Uttarakhand, according to an exit poll conducted by Star News- AC Nielsen. Of the 69 seats for which polls were held in the state today, the survey gives BJP 33 seats with 29 per cent votes. The ruling Congress comes to a second place with 25 seats and 26 per cent votes while others get 11 seats with 45.....

Assembly election for Uttarakhand's Bajpur constituency on March 25

Dehra Dun, Feb 21 (UNI) Election for Bajpur Assembly constituency in Uddhamsingh Nagar district of Uttarahand will be held on March 25. According to the Assistant Chief Election Officer Jung Vijay Singh the notification will be issued on February 23. The election in the constituency was deferred due to the death of a Congress candidate in a road accident while coming back from poll campaigning on February 18. 55 to 60 per cent polling in Uttarakhand Assembly election

Dehra Dun, Feb 21 (UNI) Nearly 55 to 60 per cent out of an electorate of nearly 60,00,000 exercised their franchise in the Uttarakhand Assembly election for 69 seats today. A similar turnout was recorded for the Tehri Lok Sabha by poll today. Barring a few incidents of clashes between workers of political parties and voters complaining that their names were missing from the voters list, no untoward incident was reported.
