CM orders judicial probe into boat accident

Kochi, Feb 21 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today ordered a judicial inquiry into the boat accident in Ovungal Kadavu in Periyar river that claimed 18 lives.

The Chief Minister also announced ex-gratia of Rs two lakh each to the relatives of the dead.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Angamaly St Antony's School, where the bodies of the victims were kept for the public to pay their last respects, Mr Achuthanadan said the probe would look into factors like boat safety and the timing of the picnic to visit Thattekkadu Bird Sanctuary by boat.

He said the excursion was undertaken by the school authorities, teachers and students, without giving serious thought to safety.

The Chief Minister also conveyed the government's condolence to the bereaved.

Meanwhile, police have recoverd the ill-fated boat from the river. It was brought ashore for further investigations.

Congress stages walk out on Council Chairman issue

Bangalore, Feb 21 (UNI) The Opposition Congress members today staged a walk out in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in protest against Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's remarks on the Council Chairman issue. Vatal Nagaraj stages walk out on Cauvery

Bangalore, Feb 21 (UNI) Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj today staged a walk out in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly after failing to persuade the Government to pass a resolution on the Cauvery issue following the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal pronouncing its verdict recently. Raising the issue in the House, Mr Nagaraj urged Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to ensure that the House discussed the verdict in detail and passed an unanimous resolution so that the Government's stand on.....

Karnataka Assembly adjourned to March 16

Bangalore, Feb 21 (UNI) The Karnataka Legislative Assembly was adjourned to March 16 for the budget session. Both the Houses of the State Legislature were convened on January 25, when Governor T N Chaturvedi delivered a joint address to the members of both the Houses. The motion of thanks to the Governor's address was passed without reply as the main Opposition party Congress had staged a dharna, demanding immediate election to the Legislative Council Chairman's post.
