BJP welcomes UP assembly elections' schedule

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) The BJP today welcomed the decision of the Election Commission to hold assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in seven phases from April 7 to May 8.

BJP Spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said the party was comfortably placed to face the polls and expected the people to repose their faith in its ability to give good governance to the country's biggest state, both in terms of population and geographical size.

About holding elections in seven phases, Mr Prasad said the Election Commission must have taken all factors into consideration before deciding the elections' schedule.

However, the BJP wanted deployment of central forces in every booth to prevent any misuse of authority by the state government, he added.

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) Around 49 per cent polling was registered in the elections to 69 out of 70 assembly seats of Uttarakhand, which passed off peacefully today. Briefing reporters here, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy said the elections were held for 69 assembly constituencies as the elections to the Bajpur seat was countermanded following the death of the Congress candidate. Election to that seat will be held on March 25 for which a notification will be issued on February.....

BJP ahead of others in Uttarakhand, according to exit poll

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) BJP has emerged as the most likely party to form government in the hill state of Uttarakhand, according to an exit poll conducted by Star News- AC Nielsen. Of the 69 seats for which polls were held in the state today, the survey gives BJP 33 seats with 29 per cent votes. The ruling Congress comes to a second place with 25 seats and 26 per cent votes while others get 11 seats with 45.....

Dehra Dun, Feb 21 (UNI) Election for Bajpur Assembly constituency in Uddhamsingh Nagar district of Uttarahand will be held on March 25. According to the Assistant Chief Election Officer Jung Vijay Singh the notification will be issued on February 23. The election in the constituency was deferred due to the death of a Congress candidate in a road accident while coming back from poll campaigning on February 18. Dehra Dun, Feb 21 (UNI) Nearly 55 to 60 per cent out of an electorate of nearly 60,00,000 exercised their franchise in the Uttarakhand Assembly election for 69 seats today. A similar turnout was recorded for the Tehri Lok Sabha by poll today. Barring a few incidents of clashes between workers of political parties and voters complaining that their names were missing from the voters list, no untoward incident was reported.
