Bharitya Kisan Sangh highlights farmers plight

Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (UNI) Bharatiya Kisan Sangh Gujarat President Prafull Senjaliya has expressed concern over deteriorating state of farmers in the country.

''Even half a century after independence the state of farmers in the country is miserable, as they don't get proper price for their produce. The apathetic attitude of the government has put the farmers on the brink of suicide,'' Mr Senjaliya said in the memorandum to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

''There is a big talk regarding farmer's upliftment. There is also subsidy in agriculture. Yet, the state of farmer has remained as it is. The world trade has been made easy through the implementation of GATT and WTO. However, all this has not yeilded any positive result,'' he said.

The memorandum included demands like withdrawal of ban on the export of milk powder, wheat and onions, introduction of independent budget for agriculture like railway and reinclusion of pulses and tur daal in commodity exchange.

That apart, it also demanded restoration of electricity connection in 57 sub-districts of Gujarat that face electricity shortage.

8 held for manufacturing country liquor in Anand

Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (UNI) Eight persons were arrested today on charges of making country liquor from Panchavati area of Karamsad village, about 5 km from here. Acting on a tip-off, Anand local crime branch and Vidyanagar police raided the place and seized Rs 31,500 worth country liquor and 6,300 litre of molasses and other ingredients used for making liquor. The liquor was being supplied to Ahmedabad and Vadodara. UNI.....

21 industrial units default Central excise payment in Surat

Surat, Feb 22 (UNI) Office of the Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs has informed here that 21 industrial units, with revenue over Rs 50 lakh, have defaulted the payment of Central excise arrears. In a notification issued by the Central Excise Commissionerate, Surat-1, the Additional Commissioner (Recovery) has informed that the government would take coercive action if the dues were not paid immediately. The defaulters include many textile units having revenue income of more than Rs five crore. UNI.....

Food stall owner stabbed to death

Kolhapur, Feb 22 (UNI) A food-stall owner was stabbed to death in the Shahupuri area here this evening and two persons have been arrested in this connection. The deceased has been identified as Nagesh Prabhakar Khamkar (35), a resident of the Rajampuri locality here, police inspector G P Dabade informed. Police have arrested two brothers, Kadane brothers, in connection with the murder. The Kadane brothers also run a food-stall here, Mr Dabade said. Police suspect business rivalry to be the motive.....
