Alcatel-Lucent completes first field trial of WiMAX in India

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) C-Dot Alcatel-Lucent Research Centre (CARC) has successfully completed its first live WiMAX field trial using Aircel's licensed spectrum, confirming that the technology is ready for commercial deployment.

The trials for the IEEE 802.16e-2005 popularly called as the WiMAX technology were conducted using the 2.5GHz band and applications in moving conditions such as video streaming, high-speed file downloads, Voice over IP (VoIP) and web browsing, Alcatel-Lucent announced here today.

''Alcatel-Lucent's WiMAX solutions and their capability to offer higher throughout are poised to address service providers' challenges to offer reliable and affordable broadband services bundled with VoIP,'' said Mr Jagdish Kini, Group Chief Executive Officer, Aircel.

WiMAX technology is likely to become a widely used high-speed internet access technology like DSL and cable modem access, he added.

Alcatel-Lucent President (South Asia) Ravi Sharma said his company and Aircel both saw WiMAX Rev-e as a revolutionary broadband access technology which has the potential to provide India with widespread broadband access that can usher in economic growth, better education, health care and improved entertainment services.

WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access.

It enables voice and broadband connectivity for fixed, nomadic or mobile use in urban, suburban and rural areas.

Aircel Business Solutions (ABS), a part of Aircel, is headquartered in Chennai and is a registered member of the WiMAX forum -- both in the Indian and international chapters.

ABS' portfolio includes products such as Multi Protocol Label Switching Virtual Private Networks (MPLS VPNs), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Managed Video Services on wireless platform including WiMAX.

Metal up on fresh demand

Mumbai, Feb 22 (UNI) Metals went up today due to increase of fresh demand, traders at the Bombay Metal Exchange said today. In the ferrous category, copper heavy and brass cutting increased by Rs 900 and Rs 500, respectively, on higher advice. Copper utencils and brass utencils also hiked by Rs 200 each on reduced stock supply. In the non-ferrous category copper wire bar shot up by Rs 500 per quintal while zinc slab and lead ingot also rose by Rs.....

Sensex crashes by 167.18 pts

Mumbai, Feb 22 (UNI) Continuing with the downslide for the third consecutive day, the Sensex plunged by 167.18 points today on the Bombay Stock Exchange and closed in the red at 14,021.31 points on sustained heavy selling pressure by mutual funds and other operators. A sudden sell-off gripped the market in late trading on expiry of February 2007 derivative contracts. Much of the fall materialised in the last 50 minutes of trade. Cement, auto, banking shares and pharma pivotals weakened.....

Prices of groundnutseed, its oil up; RBD palmolein ease

Mumbai, Feb 22 (UNI) Prices of Groundnutseed, its oil went up on good demand while RBD Palmolein eased on lack of fresh demand, traders at the Bombay Commodity Exchange (BCE) today said. Castorseed futures contract slashed by Rs 17 per quintal on lack of fresh demand and closed at Rs 1946 per quintal with 120 tonnes volume.
