Vikas Yadav seeks stay on conviction citing Sidhu's case

New Delhi, Feb 20 (UNI) Vikas Yadav, who is the main accused in the Nitish Katara murder case and has also been sentenced to four years Rigorous Imprisonment for destruction of evidence in Jessica Lall murder case, has moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on his conviction relying on its judgement in the case of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Yadav, in his appeal, has contended that his case was similar to that of Sidhu, convicted by the Punjaband Haryana High Court for an offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and that his conviction should also be stayed so that he may also contest the election.

He has also pleaded that in the last Assembly election he had lost by a narrow margin of 400 votes.

The petitioner has finally contended that the Delhi High Court, being unable to appreciate the evidence in correct perspective, had convicted him wrongly.

According to the petitioner, the Supreme Court had stayed the conviction and sentence of the former test cricketer and BJP MP from Amritsar, to enable him to contest byelectios from Amritsar, polling for which took place on February 13, 2007.
