Monica hearing: Driver deposes

Bhopal, Feb 20 (UNI) A local court today recorded two witnesses' statements and accepted applications by the defence and the prosecution in a fake passports case wherein underworld don Abu Salem and his starlet-girlfriend Monica Bedi stand accused.

Monica's driver Mukesh Sharma and ration card official Umashankar Verma deposed before Chief Judicial Magistrate Raveendra Singh.

''I conveyed Ms Bedi by car to Nepal's Sanoni border,'' said Mr Sharma.

Mr Verma said that prior to 1995, the system of door-to-door verification for ration cards did not exist.

Defence Counsel P C Bedi objected against the prosecution not presenting a trial programme. The bench accepted the application and directed the prosecution to present the programme.

Public Prosecutor R K Motwani urged that Deputy Inspector-General (Central Bureau of Investigation) O P Chhanwal and the CBI's Officer on Special Duty Raveen Sharma be included in the list of witnesses.

The hearing will continue tomorrow.

Railway to lay 2,000 km Broad Gauge Railway line in 2007-08

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) The Indian Railways has drawn up plans for laying 2,000 km of new Broad Gauge Railway line during 2007-08, Railway Board Chairman J P Batra said here today. Addressing the conventional post-budget press conference, Mr Batra said the ministry is confident that this would be increased to 3,000 km of additional new lines in the year 2008-09. He said in the proposed budget 2,600 new coaches would be added while some 400 old coaches would be.....

Legal experts authorised to take further action on Cauvery: CM

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) The Karnataka Government has authorised its legal experts to take further action on the Cauvery issue, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said here today. In his brief interaction with newspersons after discussions with Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, the CM said the All Party Meeting held on February 24 had fully authorised the legal experts to go ahead with their course of action after rejecting the final verdict of the Cauvery Water.....

Police solve murder mystery

Hyderabad, Feb 20 (UNI) The city police have solved the murder of one Thakur Narayan Singh last year by an advocate, who committed the deed to encash insurance policies worth Rs 67 lakh in Singh's name. An official release here said the advocate Tharachand Choudary had taken Singh to the Kuntala waterfalls in Adilabad district on November 30 last year. Tharachand Choudary with the help of his car driver Laxminarayana Goud and office boy L Dilip Reddy pushed Thakur Narayan Singh.....
