Chennai, Feb 18: The Tamil Nadu Government will finalise its standon the vexed Cauvery issue at an all-party meeting convened by ittomorrow to discuss the final award of the Cauvery Water DisputesTribunal (CWDT).
The state government had already decided to move the tribunal andtake legal recourse to redress the ''shortcomings'' in the final awardand is likely to get the stamp of approval for its moves duringtomorrow's meeting.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi would preside over the meeting to beheld at Secretariat here. Besides DMK's allies --the Congress, PattaliMakkal Katchi (PMK), CPI(M), CPI and the Dalit Panthers of India,leaders of the Opposition AIADMK, MDMK and BJP among others, would alsotake part.
Initially, the DMK Government was hesitant about convening themeeting but relented after various political parties, mainly the PMK,demanded the government convene the meeting immediately to analyse theaward.
Mr Karunanidhi had earlier maintained the meeting could be convened only after due consideration.
''If the meeting results in anything fruitful, it's good. It should not lead to unfavourable consequences,'' he said.
In its much-awaited verdict delivered on February five, the CWDTordered Karnataka to release 192 tmcft of water from Bilingundlu. Thishad triggered a fiery debate in Tamil Nadu with political partiesdiffering in their views on the issue. While Mr Karunanidhi had saidthe award had offered relief and justice, his bete noire and AIADMKGeneral Secretary J Jayalalithaa claimed the quantum of water allocatedfor Tamil Nadu in the final award was lower than the interim award anddemanded the state move the Supreme Court.
PMK Founder-Leader S Ramadoss had also called the Tribunal's finalaward as disappointing while DMK's other allies-- the Congress and theLeft -- welcomed it saying it brought the curtains down on the vexedissue.
Mr Karunanidhi on February ten, said the government would file areview petition before CWDT seeking removal of ''shortcomings'' in thefinal order like the decisions to adopt 50 per cent dependability todetermine the utilisable quantum of water and to scale down the area ofkuruvai crop cultivation.
Making it clear the option for filing the review petition had notbeen closed, he said the government would list the shortcomings andargue the State's case firmly.
The government would also not hesitate to seek legal remedy, he said implying it would move the Apex Court to seek redressal.
The government is also likely to hold discussions with irrigationand legal experts and representatives of farmers' associations beforefinalising its stand.
