About 90 candidates for first phase poll

Imphal, Jan 22: About 90 candidates have filed their nominations for the first phase of state legislative Assembly polls on February eight.

The Congress had fielded altogether 20 candidates in 19 constituencies.

The Congress in a notification had stated that A S Arthur would be the official candidate at Ukhrul. Mr Arthur had replaced Aleng.

However, the final list would be known after the completion of withdrawal process, official sources said.

The Manipur Peoples' Party (MPP) has fielded eight, the NCP and RJD five each and the CPI four.

Meanwhile, the nomination process for the second phase of elections scheduled is for February 14 began today.

In the second phase, elections would be held at Bishenpur, Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

Dabur to set up unit in UAE at $5-10 mln

Dubai, Jan 22 (UNI) Dabur International, India's fourth largest FMCG company, will set up a new manufacturing unit in Ras Al Khaimah, with an estimated investment between 5-10 million dollars, a company official said.

Dabur has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary under Dabur International in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), Naturelle, under which the manufacturing and trading will be done.

India, Qatar to sign labour agreement

Doha, Jan 22: India and Qatar are set to sign a labour agreement that will provide better working conditions to over 1,80,000 Indian workers in the gulf nation besides ensuring timely payment of wages and perks.

This agreement will also serve as a 'model' for future agreements with other gulf nations where more than three million Indian workers are enganged in various developmental activities, press reports said.

Protection cannot be provided to witnesses in criminal cases: SC

New Delhi, Jan 22 (UNI) The Supreme Court today made it clear that protection cannot be provided to witnesses appearing in criminal cases as it is not 'physically possible' for police to grant protection to the thousands coming to courts on a daily basis. 4 held on cricket betting charges

Visakhapatnam, Jan 22 (UNI) The city task force police arrested four people for allegedly organising betting on the Australia-Newzealand one-dayer last night.

On a tip-off, police raided a house in Santipuram and arrested D L N Raju, S K S N Raju, G Satyanarayana Raju and J Suryanarayan Raju.

Police seized eight cellphones and a laptop from them.
