Bangalore, Jan 19 (UNI) Several people, including a few policemen, were injured and a police van was set on fire in Bharatinagar here today, forcing the police to lob teargas shells on a mob protesting the hanging of deposed Iraq President Saddam Hussein.

Police sources said the group on its way to the protest rally at Shivaji Nagar in the city, started pelting stones and attempted to torch a shop.

To disperse the crowd, police lobbed tear gas shells. In the melee, about a dozen policemen, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), were injured. The mob also set ablaze a 'Hoysala' patrol van.

Additional police force was rushed to the area to bring it back to normal. The situation was still reportedly tense.

Gunde Yesu arrested by West Godavari police

Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, Jan 19 (UNI) West Godavari police today nabbed Gunde Yesu, absconding accused in the Rudrakshapalli massacre and an associate of notorious criminal Tadiparti Rama Rao, at Jangareddigudem town here.

Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police, West Godavari district M Jaganamohan Reddy said on a tip off, a police team led by Jangareddigudem Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chaganti Ramarao and Nuzvid SDPO G Narayanaswamy, arrested Yesu, who escaped from the sub-jail in Nuzvid in Krishna district last month.

SPACE-GSLV-CRYOGENIC-TEST ABORTED FOUR LAST MAHENDRAGIRI

The scheduled full-duration test assumed significance as ISRO's Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), with its own cryogenic stage, is scheduled to roar into the skies from the SHAR Range in Sriharikota by the end of this year, carrying a satellite weighing over 2500 kg. The 400-tonne GSLV was a three-stage vehicle, with the third stage being the cryogenic stage, which too would fire for about 720 seconds in actual flight before placing the satellite in the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.

Musharraf calls Ahmadinejad

Islamabad, Jan 19 (UNI) Pakistan's President General Musharraf spoke to his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on telephone today and informed him about his forthcoming visit to Saudi Arabia , Egypt , Syria and Jordan for consultations on the West Asian crisis .

Aishwarya Rai parents offer prayers

Mangalore, Jan 18 (UNI) Family members of Bollywood actress Aishwaraya Rai, who was engaged to Abhishek Bachchan, offered prayers at Nagabana (Birthplace of Aishwaraya) in Sonthady near Kasargod today.

Poojas were offered by Aishwaraya Rai's mother Ms Vrinda Rai as per the tradition of Tulunadu culture during annual fair yesterday, a close relative of Aishwarya told UNI on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, Mr Krishnarajendra Rai, father of Aishwarya arrived here today and offered pooja in the famous Dharmastala.
