PM, Sonia Gandhi to campaign for Manipur elections

Imphal, Jan 17: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be coming to Manipur early February to campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Union minister Oscar Fernandes here today said Dr Singh and Ms Gandhi had been formally invited to visit Manipur but dates are not yet finalised.

Mr Fernandes further said Union Minister P R Kyndiah was also present here for the coming polls and other senior Congress leaders would be coming to the state for the elections.

The party had already announced the list of 19 candidates for the first phase elections and the other list would be announced soon, he said.

The party had witnessed several violent incident here for the past few days over the issuance of tickets, party sources said.

'' The party would be going alone in the elections and be banking on the stability provided by the five years of Congress led government,'' he said.

He further said O Ibobi was the first Chief Minister in the state to have completed five years of term.
