Cong list of candidates for Punjab likely tomorrow

New Delhi, Jan 16 (UNI) The Central Election Committee of the Congress, headed by party President Sonia Gandhi and having Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as one of its members, met here today to finalise the names of candidates for the single-phase Assembly elections in Punjab to be held on February 13.

The meeting, held at the the official residence of Ms Gandhi, was attended among others by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, PCC President Shamsher Singh Dullo and AICC General Secretary incharge of Punjab Janardan Dwivedi, according to party sources.

The meeting, which was still in progress, is expected to finalise the names of all the 117 candidates for the state. The final list of candidates may be made public tomorrow, the sources said.

The Congress is likely to put up candidates for all the 117 seats as it has not arrived at any poll alliance with any party so far. During the last Assembly elections, it had fielded 105 candidates having entered into poll alliance with the Left parties leaving 24 seats for them. The party had won 62 seats.

Meanwhile, a crowd of ticket seekers from the state and their supporters waited at the AICC Headquarters this evening to know the names of their candidates for their respective constituencies as the CEC meeting progressed.
