Gurbachan singh Babbehali to contest Gurdaspur assembly seat

Jalandhar, Jan 10 (UNI) Milkfed Chairman Gurbachan Singh Babbehali who recently quit Congress to join Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) has been fielded by the later from Gurdaspur segment for the February 13 assembly elections in Punjab.

SAD president and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced Babbehali's candidature this evening.

Besides, Mr Babbehali, sitting MLA Sadhu Singh Rajeana has also been refielded from Bagha Purana assembly constituency, Mr Badal said.

With this, the SAD has so far announced names of 92 party candidates. Two or three more nominees will to be announced later.

The party is contesting the election in alliance with BJP and the later is expected to contest 22 or 23 of the total 117 assembly seats.

Africa pledges to tighten nuclear security

ALGIERS, Jan 10 (Reuters) African nations pledged today to tighten nuclear safety on a continent where often lax security, long exploited by arms smugglers, has raised recent concern about the safeguarding of uranium stockpiles.

''African Ministers and Officials ... undertake to strengthen nuclear safety and security measures within a global approach aiming at promoting safe and accountable use of nuclear energy,'' at least 45 countries said in a joint statement.

The statement was issued at the end of a two-day meeting.....

Russian parliament raps US on Kyoto, trade rules

MOSCOW, Jan 10 (Reuters) Russia's parliament called on the US Congress today to approve the Kyoto Protocol on cutting carbon emissions and urged Washington to remove a trade restriction dating back to the Cold War.

''Russian deputies ... call upon the Americans to set out objectively how they plan to deal with the problems of ratifying international agreements that are key for guaranteeing the security of the human race,'' the parliament said in a statement.

Hamas says in talks with Abbas on new government

DAMASCUS, Jan 10 (Reuters) President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas are in fresh talks on a Palestinian government, but the Islamist group now insists that Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh must keep his post, Hamas's exiled leader said today.

Hamas, which leads the Palestinian government, and Abbas's Fatah are locked in a deadly power struggle in Gaza which has raised fears of a civil war.

Woman gets life imprisonment for murdering sister-in-law

Vadodara, Jan 11: A local court awarded life imprisonment to a woman for killing her sister-in-law after suspecting her of having an affair with her husband.

Vadodara District and Sessions Judge R H Sharma yesterday held Ranjanaben Rathod guilty of murdering her sister-in-law Urmila (25) and awarded the sentence. The Court, however, acquitted her husband Raman for lack of evidence.

Spurned lover beheads girl, commits suicide

Mumbai, Jan 11 (UNI) A spurned lover allegedly beheaded a 15-year-old girl in broad daylight at Saki Naka in western suburbs and committed suicide later in the day, police said.

Premchand Morya alias Chinnu (20), beheaded his neighbour Sundari Tripathi (15) yesterday, while she was on her way home from a tuition class at about 1630 hrs at Yadav Nagar, closer to her home, police sources said.

Later, he went to Kurla Railway station at about 2000 hrs and committed suicide.....
