BSP releases list of 73 candidates for Punjab assembly polls

Chandigarh, Jan 10 (UNI) Punjab unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) today released the list of 73 candidates for the assembly elections to be held on February 13.

BSP general secretary and Punjab incharge of the party Narender Kashyap told mediapersons here that the names for the remaining 44 constituencies would be announced soon.

Clearing the stigma attached to BSP that it only belongs to Scheduled Caste, Mr Kashyap said,''We have alloted tickets to members of every community on the basis of their chances to win.'' He said, out of the total 73 seats, members of the Scheduled Caste got the lion's share with 30 seats, however, members of the general category would be contesting on 22 seats, including Jatt Sikh, Rajput and Khatri candidates on 13,4,3 seats respectively while Vaish and Brahmin community members were given one seat each.

Mr Kashyap said the members of the Backward Class would be contesting on 20 seats and also one seat has been alloted to member of a scheduled tribe.

He informed that during the campaign period, BSP president Ms Mayawati would address at least 18 rallies in the state and manifesto of the party would be released before January 18.

Sen Biden intends to run for US President 2008

Washington, Dec 27: Delaware Sen Joseph Biden, one of the Democratic party's leading voices on foreign policy and a sharp critic of President George W. Bush's handling of the Iraq war, said he intends to run for president in 2008. ''It is my intention to seek the nomination, and it's my intention sometime in the month of January to set up the appropriate mechanism to be able to raise money for that purpose,'' Biden said.....
