Restrction for using govt vehicles in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 8: Manipur's Chief Electoral Officer R.R.Rashmi hasdirected to all government departments to immediately withdraw allofficial vehicles to the Ministers/MLAs and keep them in governmentcustody in view of coming Assembly polls in February.

However, only the Ministers are entitled to use their officialvehicles in their place of residence to their office for official workprovided that such commuting is not combined with any electioneering orany political activity.

Mandal Congress president shot dead

Guwahati, Jan 7 (UNI) A Congress leader was shot dead by ULFA militants in Asom's Tinsukia district last night, police today said.

The incident occurred at about 0000 hours when ULFA militants opened fire on the Mandal president in Deurigaon under Paneri police station area of the district.

As many as 34 people, mostly Hindi speaking, were killed in the serial attacks by the ULFA militants in Tinsukia distrct on Friday night.

The toll in the attacks had gone upto 48.....

Chilly winds bring mercury down in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Jan 7 (UNI) The temperature in Bhuj dipped to 10.6 degrees Celsius today due to north-westerly winds blowing at a speed of 7 to 8 km per hour, bringing in a sharp fall in mercury.

Naliya in Kutch district continued to shiver, though the temperatures rose marginally to 3.8 degrees Celsius at 0830 hrs today as compared to 2.6 degrees yesterday, the lowest recorded temperature in the state since the past three years.

Bandh returns to Bengal after Nandigram violence

Kolkata, Jan 7 (UNI) The West Bengal Pradesh Congress today called a 24-hour Bangla bandh tomorrow, protesting against the last night's violence at Nandigram in West Midnapore district in connection with the alleged rumours regarding the governments forceful acqusition of farm land.

All India Trinamool Congress-supported Krishi Jami Raskya Committee (committee for protection of farm land) had also called a 12-hour statewide bandh from 0600 hours tomorrow, protesting against the alleged police atrocities on innocent farmers in Nandigram last night,.....

Maximum security and compensation to ULFA carnage victims: Jaiswal

Guwahati, Jan 7 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal today made an on-the-spot assessment of the terror-hit districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia in Upper Asom, where 48 people, mostly Hindi-speaking, were shot dead by ULFA militants on Friday night.

The national highway blockade imposed by the affected Hindi-speaking people by placing bodies of their kin on the road continued as the protestors refused to disperse even after Mr Jaiswal's assurances of 'maximum security and maximum compensation'.

Asom Guv condemns massacre; VHP points to fundamentalist hand

Guwahati, Jan 7 (UNI) Asom Governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh today condemned the massacre of 48 people by the banned ULFA in three districts of the state on Friday night.

The governor said in a statement issued here, ''I strongly condemn the inhuman and dastardly massacre of a singled out peace loving and hard working community by the ULFA.'' He said ULFA's intention of distrupting the National Games by such violent acts would be foiled by the government and.....
