Tribal students' bandh affect life in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 4 (UNI) The 24-hour strike called by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) in protest against the failure of the state government to fulfil the demands of tribal students' union, affected life here today.

The bandh, which began ast night, would continue till midnight.

The students had demanded that all backlog pending reservations for tribals should be completed. The ATSUM said the government had given 22 per cent normal reservation which was rejected by the Centre.

All bus services were cancelled in view of the bandh. However, banks and most shops in the state remained open. So far, no untoward incident has been reported.

The ATSUM has threatened to call an indefinite economic blockade on the NH 39 and the NH 53 from tomorrow onwards.

Meanwhile, the Jiribam district demand committee has called indefinite economic blockade on the NH 53 from today demanding district status for Jiribum sub-division.

Extra troops, cops being called in to safeguard Obama's swearing-in

New York, January 9 (ANI): American military and law enforcement officials have decided to add more soldiers and cops than previously planned to safeguard President-elect Barack Obama's Inauguration Day.Sources have revealed that an additional 3,000 troops and 2,000 cops will be deployed to safeguard Obama's swearing-in on January 20.The addition of extra force will bring the tally to 7,000 soldiers and 10,000 police, they reveal.A law enforcement source has revealed that "they are just panic-stricken" over.....
