Three phase polls in Manipur to minimize violence: Duggal

Guwahati, Jan 4 (UNI) Union Home Secretary V K Duggal today asserted that the government would take all possible measures to ensure a violence-free Assembly elections in Manipur next month.

The state goes to polls in three phases from February 8, with the second phase of polling likely to be held on February 14 instead of the earlier declared date of February 15 as it coincides with Manipur Festival. The final phase is slated on February 23 rpt 23.

Mr Duggal had visited Manipur yesterday and was talking to reporters here today after reviewing the preparation for National Games in Asom from February 9.

He said the decision to hold elections in three phases in Manipur was taken to ensure that it was violence-free.

He said, ''The government observed that phase-wise elections are more violence-free than polls on a single day. The last few Assembly polls in many states were spread over three to five phases and had been relatively violence-free.'' Mr Duggal expressed satisfaction over security and other arrangements in Manipur for the coming polls. He had met the governor and the chief minister, including other high officials, during his visit yesterday.

BJP hopes to wrest power in Delhi, BrihanMumbai municipal polls

BJP tightens belt for coming elections in four states

New Delhi, Jan 4 (UNI) Counting on anti-incumbency factor, the BJP has begun in full swing its poll preparations, confident of winning a majority in Uttarakhand, and in Punjab with its bigger partner Shiromani Akali Dal.

While it will be contesting all the 70 assembly seats in Uttarakhand, the party has decided to put up its candidates only at 22 or 23 seats in Punjab, where the remaining of the 117 seats will be left for SAD, party sources told.....

K'taka Transport Minister gheraoed

Mandya, Karnataka, Jan 4 (UNI) Karnataka Transport Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy was today gheraoed here by the villagers of Hasagavi, demanding not to start a bio-gas compost manure production plant near S M Sugars as it would pollute the environment.

The agitators surrounded the Minister as he emerged out of the Deputy Commissioner's office after attending a meeting.

The Minister asured them that the villagers' feedback would be taken into consideration, before taking any decision.

K'taka Govt to launch new scheme for destitute women

Bangalore, Jan 4 (UNI) The Karnataka Government proposed to start a scheme called 'Asare' from next month, enabling provision of direct loans to educated, unemployed and destitute women to take up self-employment, State Woman and Child Development Minister H K Kumaraswamy said today.

Talking to reporters here, he said his department would identify 50 such beneficiaries in the age group of 18 to 45 from each district and provide loan from Rs 50,000 to Rs two lakh.
