SYDNEY, Jan 4 (Reuters) Asian stocks listed on Wall Street <.BKAS> rose 0.36 percent with China plays in solid demand following stellar gains in their local shares that helped lift Hong Kong markets to record highs.

<0981.HK> surged 22 percent on speculation the chip maker could become a takeover target. See [ID:nN03443669] U.S. stocks ended modestly higher in the first trading session of 2007 on Wednesday with the blue-chip Dow <.DJI> adding 0.09 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index <.IXIC> climbing 0.33 percent.

In Asia on Wednesday, MSCI's measure of regional stocks excluding Japan <.MSCIAPJ> slipped 0.36 percent after reaching an intra-day record high, snapping five straight sessions of gains.

Thailand shares fell 3 percent on fears of political instability following bomb blasts in Bangkok on New Year's eve.

Gold steadies after New York sell-off, eyes dollar

SINGAPORE, Jan 4 (Reuters) Gold steadied on Thursday, holding above $627 an ounce after falling nearly 2 percent in New York because of a firming U.S. dollar.

-- Spot gold was at $627.50/628.50 an ounce by 0047 GMT, barely changed from $627.70/628.70 late in New York on Wednesday.

-- Investec Australia pegged support at $615 an ounce and resistance at $642 an ounce.

-- Tokyo gold futures reopened after a holiday. Benchmark gold futures <0JAU:> on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange,.....

DaimlerChrysler to set up van venture in China

Shanghai, Jan 4: Car maker DaimlerChrysler AG has received government approval to set up a joint venture to manufacture vans in China, an official Chinese newspaper said on Thursday.

The company's Mercedes-Benz brand will form a venture with Fujian Motor Industry Group and Taiwan's China Motor Corp. in which the firms will invest more than 200 million euros, the Shanghai Securities News reported, citing sources.

Nikkei average rises 0.74 percent on Thursday

Tokyo, Jan 4: The Nikkei average rose 0.74 percent on Thursday, the first trading day of 2007, with Toyota Motor Corp.

rising on news that it became one of the Big Three automakers in 2006 and other exporters advanced on a softer yen.

Tokyo markets were open for a half day of business on Thursday from 09:00-11:00 a.m. (0000 GMT-0200 GMT). They were closed Monday through Wednesday for New Year's holidays.

Investors also bought Hitachi Ltd. and Mitsubishi.....

US intelligence czar leaving post, go to State

WASHINGTON, Jan 4 (Reuters) The director of US national intelligence, John Negroponte, will leave his post to take a senior position at the US State Department, US officials said.

''He will leave to become Deputy Secretary of State,'' said a US official who asked not to be identified yesterday.

The official said an official announcement is expected soon. But it was not clear how soon Mr Negroponte would be able to leave his current position because there is no deputy standing.....
