IIIT devp minuscule microchips under central proj

Allahabad, Jan 4: India would join a elite group of nations who would produce micro-chips that would greatly shrink the size of mobile phones, while enhancing their processing capacity and speed beyond imagination.

Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) has been entrusted by the Government to develop miniscule chips of 0.1 micron, against available 4.8 micron with a budget of more than Rs 200 crore. A communication to this effect was received from department of science and technology by the institute recently.

''We have received communication for establishing state-of-art centre of micro-electronics at Amethi expected to cost Rs 200 crore following joint statement released during the visit of Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal to Switzerland,'' IIIT-Allahabad Director Murli Dhar Tiwari said here.

The ambitious endeavour would be core area of research to be carried out through the establishment of centre of micro-electronics with the support of Switzerland.

The aim of proposed Indo-Swiss centre of micro-electronics is to reduce the size of available microchips of 4.8 micron to 0.8-0.1 micron.

Taliban deny receiving backing from Pakistan

Spin Boldak (Afghanistan), Dec 16: Taliban today denied accusations by Afghan leaders the group was being sponsored by Pakistan, an issue souring relations between the two nations. A senior rebel commander, Hayat Khan, said Afghan President Hamid Karzai was trying to hide his own failure and the Taliban movement lived only on the support of ordinary people. ''Karzai's allegations are baseless. We neither have any links with Pakistan nor is the country helping.....
