IICT scientist selected for Rajib Goyal award

Hyderabad, Jan 4: Indian Institute of Chemicals Technology (IICT) Deputy Director Dr S Chandrasekhar has been awarded for the Rajib Goyal Young Scientist Prize in Chemistry for the year 2005.

Dr Chandrasekhar has been selected in recognition of his contributions, including synthesis of bioactive molecules in anti-cancer, immunosuppressive and anti-depressant activities.

Involvements in complex natural product synthesis like Epothilone, Eleutherobin and Callipeltin-A showed his interest in taking up projects concerning human health. He identified Polyethyleneglycol, an FDA approved biocompatible material as a recyclable solvent for metal catalysed C-C bond forming reaction and asymmetric synthesis.

Dr Chandhrasekhar, a researcher leading a team of over 32 students pursuing PhD, was the recipient of several prestigious awards like CSIR young scientist, INSA young scientist, Birla scientific award and young scientist award instituted by the AP academy of sciences.

This prestigious prize was given annually to scientists who made outstanding contributions in chemistry and was instituted by an NRI philanthropist Ram S Goyal from the US, an IICT release here said yesterday.
