Former PGA Tour winner Massengale dies aged 69

HOUSTON, Jan 4 (Reuters) Twice former PGA Tour champion Don Massengale died in Conroe, Texas following a heart attack, the Tour said.

American Massengale, who lost out to compatriot Don January in a playoff for the 1967 PGA Championship at Columbine Country Club in Littleton, Colorado, was 69.

''Don was a significant contributor to both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, winning tournaments on both Tours,'' PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement yesterday.

''He was a strong performer and solid individual who was well respected by his peers and later appreciated by his many students for his teaching acumen, having learned the game from legendary teacher Harvey Penick.'' Massengale, who played the PGA Tour full-time from 1960 to 1970, won the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am and Canadian Open in 1966 on the way to a career-high 27th place in the money list.
