Construction of nuclear reactor starting this year: Kakodkar

Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, Jan 4 (UNI) Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar today said India will start constructing its Advance Heavy Water Reactor later this year as part of its domestic nuclear programme.

"The project will take five to six years to complete," Dr Kakodkar told reporters at the 94th Indian Science Congress here.

Without giving the location of the reactor, he said it would cost Rs 5 to 6 crore per MW.

The Chairman said the project was undergoing pre-licencing review.

Rice questions why Saudi might need nuke energy

Washington, Dec 16: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today questioned why oil-rich Saudi Arabia might want nuclear power and said she wanted to know more about plans by Gulf states to study nuclear energy. ''I'd like to know more about it and I think it's something that we should have discussions (about),'' Rice told Reuters when asked about the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council's decision to study a possible joint civil atomic program......
