Army orders court of inquiry into jawan assualting children

Shillong, Jan 4 (UNI) The army has ordered a court of inquiry into the recent high-handedness of a jawan accused of assaulting two street children at Pine Walk here, a defence spokesman said today.

The decision was taken after several organisations protested against the frequent 'high-handedness' of army personnel in the state.

''The matter is serious and that's why the army has ordered a court of inquiry to ascertain the facts,'' defence spokesman Wing Commander Binoy Chongtham said, adding that the ''guards have been replaced forwith''.

Wing Commander Chongtham said personnel found guilty would be severely punished.

Recently, two children - Donborlang Kharbuli and Amit Sharma - have accused Morbona, a jawan, of assaulting them while they were taking a bath at a spring near Lady Keane College.

The duo had told reporters that Marbona had beaten them up with a stick and later stamped on Kharbuli with his boot.
