Police sources said here today that seven of the victims were of above 18 years of age, three between 14-18 age group and the rest two below 14 years.

''The actual number of cases could be much higher since it is certain that many cases went unrecorded,'' officials of the Community Health Action Network (Chan) and Centre for Peace&Development (CPD) who are jointly working on anti-trafficking in Mizoram.

''Backward states like Mizoram is vulnerable to human trafficking and most of the victims have been lured out with a promise of job.

Keeping this in mind, we should be on guard against human traffickers,'' state police chief L Sailo said.

Referring to a global study on human trafficking, he estimated that India has three million human trafficking victims, with about 11,000 victims from Nepal and 300,000 from Bangladesh annually.
