Badal welcomes poll dates, says SAD-BJP combine ready

Jalandhar, Dec 29 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today welcomed the declaration of the election schedule for assembly elections in Punjab.

''SAD-BJP combine is ready for the polls and all set to defeat the ruling Congress and re-capture power,'' Mr Badal told UNI.

As per the election schedule announced by the Election Commission today, polling for 117 assembly seats in Punjab would be held on February 13, 2007 and the counting of votes would be taken up on February 27, 2007.

Moscow, Dec 29 (UNI) Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin today said Moscow is hopeful that Iran would take steps to restore international confidence in its nuclear programme. ''We hope the Iranian leadership will properly assess the situation and take concrete measures to implement Resolution 1737 in order to restore international trust in Iran's nuclear programme,'' Mr Churkin told RIA Novosti news agency. He said Tehran failed to fulfill the demands.....

Record collection at Panchalinga Darshana

Mysore, Dec 29 (UNI) The millennium's first Panchalinga Darshana at Talakkad has proved to be a huge hit, with a record collection of Rs 19,76,239 through hundis. The hundis, opened in the presence of Tahsildar Mallige Shankar, were counted by students of Government schools for the first time. The hundis at Sri Vaidyanatheswara, the principal deity of Talakkad, alone accounted for Rs 13,15,858. More than ten lakh devotees from various parts of the country.....

Mysore-Shimoga express train extended

Mysore, Dec 29 (UNI) The South Western Railway today announced that train services between Mysore and Shimoga have been further extended for six months from January one. A SWR release here today said that due to public demand, the overnight express train had been extended. The train would depart from Mysore at 2040 hrs and arrive at Shimoga at 0455 hrs. On the return direction, the train would leave Shimoga at 2200 hrs and reach.....

Assembly adopts bill seeking relief to debt-ridden farmers

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 29 (UNI) The Kerala Assembly today adopted a legislation providing for the setting up of a Commission headed by a retired High Court judge to got into cases of debt owed by farmers to institutions of credit and settle them through arbitration. The Commission to be set as per the legislation - Kerala Farmers' Debt Relief Bill, 2006 - will have powers for one-time settlement, rescheduling and waiver of interest on farm loans......
