Jaya appeals to Mamata to call off her fast

Chennai, Dec 27: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa has appealed to Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee to call off her fast, which entered 24th day today.

A release from the AIADMK office tonight said, Ms Jayalalithaa had written a letter to Mamata Banerjee appealing her to call off the fast.

Ms Jayalalithaa also telephoned her and urged her to call off the fast, the release added.

A copy of Ms Jayalalithaa's letter, which was released to the press, quoted Ms Jayalalithaa as saying,''I appeal to you( Mamata Banerjee) to give up your hunger strike. Your life is too precious to be lost in this manner.

There are so many battles to be fought and won in the interest of nation, which you can accomplish only if you are alive and well.

Please heed this appeal from your elder sister and call off your fast.''

Saddam calls for unity to fight invaders

Dubai, Dec 28: Saddam Hussein said in a letter that his pending execution should be seen as a sacrifice for the nation and called on Iraqis to unite and fight US-led forces in the country. In the letter, obtained by Reuters in Jordan today, he called on Iraqis to ''direct your enmity towards the invaders. Do not let them divide you''. But he urged them ''not to hate the peoples of the countries.....
