Top youngsters for National Schools Athletics

Mumbai, Dec 26 (UNI) A host of top young athletes from across the country will take part in the 52nd National Schools Athletic meet which will be held from December 27 to December 30 at the Priyadarshini Park here.

The meet organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Services (Government of Maharashtra) will see 3000 participants from across 30 states will vie for top honors in the U/14, U/17 and U/19 age groups for boys and girl's respectively, a release issued here today stated.

States like Maharashtra, Punjab, Kerala and Assam are expected to be among the front runners through the event. Apart from the medals that the athletes will win, the medalists will also take home a cash purse.

Apart from the overall championship there will be a Team Championship for Boys and Girls. Also included in the honors is an individual championship for each age group in the boys and girls categories. With 86 events taking place, 252 medals will be up for grabs.

The event will have its opening ceremony on December 27 for which famous Indian athlete P.T. Usha is the Guest of Honour, the release added.

Futures inch up, oil's rise may boost energy stocks

Oil rises to near $63, Iran bristles at sanctions

LONDON, Dec 26 (Reuters) Oil rose to around $63 a barrel on Tuesday after Iran warned it could use its oil exports as a weapon following the UN Security Council's decision to impose sanctions on its trade in nuclear goods. News Abu Dhabi was set to be the first to implement a new round of OPEC supply cuts added to the gains that followed two days of losses. U.S. crude climbed 54 cents to $62.95 a barrel.....

Turkmen assembly sets presidential polls

ASHGABAT, Dec 26 (Reuters) Turkmenistan's top legislative body decided today to hold polls on February 11 to replace authoritarian President Saparmurat Niyazov and launched a slow process of picking new leadership for the Central Asian state. President-for-life Niyazov, who died last week after ruling the ex-Soviet state for 21 years, left no heir apparent. His passing prompted fears of a power vacuum in a country with vast gas reserves seen as important in the West.....
