TNTF stage demo opposing VAT in city

Chennai, Dec 26: Members of the Chennai District unit of the Tamil Nadu Traders Federation (TNTF) staged a noisy demonstration here today, urging the state government to immediatelty withdraw the Tamil Nadu VAT Act, 2006, as it would badly affect the small traders.

Addressing the demonstrators, Federation State President T Vellaiyan, who led the stir said the traders would continue with their struggle till the state government withdraws the Act.

The traders would burn the xerox copies of the VAT Act on January one in the city, the day when the Value-Added Tax would come into force, he said adding that the federation would conduct regional conferences opposing the VAT in Chennai, Vellore, Salem, Thanjavur, Kanniyakumari and Madurai for five days beginning today.

Speaking on the occasion, Federation general secretary K Mohan wanted the Tamil Nadu government to realise the sufferings of the local traders and drop the implementation of VAT.

He also urged the Union Government to ban online trading of essential commodities.

Reference rate fixed at Rs 44.54 per USD

Mumbai, Dec 26 (UNI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today fixed the reference rate at Rs 44.54 per US dollar, up by five paise from 22nd December's rate of Rs 44.59 per US dollar, a RBI spokesperson said here. UNI NV KU SKB1319.....
