Shiv Sena-BJP to announce seat-sharing arrangement in 4 days

Mumbai, Dec 26 (UNI) The seat-sharing arrangement between the BJP-Shiv Sena in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections is likely to be announced in the next four days.

Talking to UNI, senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi said the discussions between the two are in the final stage and a chunk of seats will be finalised. The negotiations are on for the seats, which are claimed by both the parties.

The discussions are expected to be completed within the next four days, he added.

The former Lok Sabha Speaker said a meeting of the office-bearers to discuss the party's manifesto was held at the city Mayor's bungalow this morning, which was attended among others by Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray.

Mr Joshi said Sena chief Bal Thackeray will tomorrow address a party workers meeting in the western suburb of Goregaon, which will be the first election meeting for the Sena.

Meanwhile, state BJP president Nitin Gadkari, who is busy in the pre-electoral work for Nagpur, Amravati and Akola civic bodies, is expected to come here tomorrow and may have a meeting with the Sena chief.

ANU to host varsity Ball Badminton

Vijayawada, Dec 26 (UNI) The Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) would conduct the five-day All India Inter-University Ball Badminton tournament for men at the university campus here from tomorrow. Tournament organising secretary Y Kishore told UNI that 56 teams from different universities, comprising 560 players would take part in the tourney. He said Madras and Nagarjuna Universities were the winner and the runner up last year. He said ANU would also host the South-West Zone Kabaddi tournament.....

Iran may need nuclear power, study says

WASHINGTON, Dec 26 (Reuters) Iran's claim to need nuclear power may be genuine, given that it could run out of oil to export as soon as eight years from now, according to an analysis published today by the National Academy of Sciences. The study's author, Roger Stern, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, said investment in Iranian oil production had been inadequate to offset oil field declines and the explosive growth in domestic demand......

Big quakes off Taiwan trigger tsunami alert

TAIPEI, Dec 26 (Reuters) Two major earthquakes struck southern Taiwan today, triggering fears of destructive waves as Asia marked the second anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami. The quakes, also felt in Hong Kong and southern China, trapped six people when a building collapsed in Taiwan. No other major damage was reported and the tsunami alert was soon lifted. ''The doors of the house shook like the wind was blowing through,'' Chen Ruanfen, 21, told.....
