Packaged Commodity Rules will accomodate industrialists' concerns

New Delhi, Dec 26 (UNI) The Government today assured industry representatives that their genuine concerns will be taken care of while finalising the Packaged Commodity Rules which will be implemented from January 14, 2007.

The recent amendments in Packaged Commodity Rules, 1977 are aimed at protecting the industry from law and a number of regulations, said Ministry of Consumer Affairs Additional Secretary Alka Sirohi.

''The proposed changes in the rules are aimed to safeguard the interest of consumers, manufacturers and the packagers,'' she said.

She further mentioned that there is a need for proper labelling, weights and measures for selecting the best options and international best practices.

The changes in the amendments include declaration of name and address of the contact person on the packages, in case a consumer complaints.

The new rules mention that no stickers could be used for increase in MRP, instead a rubber stamp can be used. In case of exports, there will be no compliance on the packages. However, if imported items are being retailed, such commodities should have pakaging in conformity to the rules applicable.

Consultative process is the only way for the effective implementation of the amendments, she said in a meeting between the industry and the government organised by industry chamber FICCI.
