One naxalite killed in police encounter

Chikmagalur, Karnataka, Dec 26 (UNI) A naxalite leader was killed in Kigga forest near the temple town of Sringeri in Chikmagalur district last night in an encounter between police and naxalites.

According to police sources naxalite group leader Vikram Gowda was gunned down by the Anti Naxal Force (ANF) personnel during the encounter. Gowda was said to be the leader of a maoist group operating in the thick forests in the district.

The ANF team which spotted the three-member group carrying weapons tried to apprehend them. However, the maoists while attempting to flee, opened fire at the ANF team and in retaliation police returned the fire killing Gowda.

The gang mebers included a woman. Combing operations have been stepped up to nab the remaining two.

Police had a brief exchange of fire with the maoists groups near Shankaranarayana forest area in Udupi district last month. In the incident the maoists group had managed to escape into the forests.

Goods train derails, traffic on Lucknow-Rae Bareli route distrupted

Lucknow, Dec 26 (UNI) Rail traffic on the Lucknow-Rae Bareli route of the Northern railway was distrupted since late last night following derailment of 17 bogies of a goods train near Gangaganj railway station. Railway sources said none was injured in the incident which occurred at around 0100 hrs. The goods train was on its way to Gauriganj from Lucknow. Sources said train services between Allahabad and Lucknow have been severely affected due to the accident.....

Schwarzenegger in Calif. hospital for leg surgery

LOS ANGELES, Dec 26 (Reuters) California Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger will undergo surgery today to repair the leg he broke during a skiing accident, his office said. The 59-year-old former movie star, who broke his right femur while on holiday with his family in Sun Valley, Idaho, on Saturday, is currently in an undisclosed California hospital awaiting the routine procedure, a statement said.
