NHRC notice to Defence Secy, J

New Delhi, Dec 26 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Defence Ministry and the Jammu and Kashmir Government to inform it about the compensation given to victims of human rights violations by the armed forces in the strife-torn state.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report, the Commission has asked the Defence Secretary and the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary to file the reply.

According to the December 17 report, 76 army personnel had been punished over the past few years after complaints against them.

The report said the violations were taking place despite instructions to the armed forces to make anti-insurgency operations ''people friendly'' and minimise collateral damage.

Punishment for the guilty security personnel included dismissal from service.

Three Nepalese labourers buried alive in HP

Chamba, Dec 26 (UNI) Three Nepalese labourers were buried alive and another injured following a landslide in the tribal area of Bharmour in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh yesterday, delayed reports reaching the police today stated. According to the reports, the labourers employed by a private construction company, were killed when a portion of a hillock they were digging crashed and buried three of them. Their bodies were dug out this afternoon and handed over.....

Vice-President to visit temple town

Tirupati, Dec 26 (UNI) Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat will pay a two-day visit to Tirupati and Tirumala on December 31. Official sources said here today the Vice-President would arrive at Renigunta Airport from Chennai at 1635 hrs on December 31 and motor up to Tirumala. He would offer worship at Lord Venkateswara temple that evening and stay overnight in Padmavathi Guest House at the hilltop. Next day, on the New Year, Mr Shekhawat would participate in.....
