New agriculture policy to focus on availabilty of new markets: Pawar

Kolhapur, Dec 26 (UNI) The new agriculture policy will focus on the availability of new markets for agricultural products and proper use of water to ensure that it is beneficial to farmers, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said today.

Talking to reporters here, Mr Pawar said a committee, under his chairmanship, will study in detail the new draft policy with various state chief ministers at a meeting to be convened soon and necessary steps will be taken.

He said the policy is under consideration of his Ministry and assistance of experts and other concerned departments will be taken.

To a query, Mr Pawar, who is also the NCP chief, said state NCP leaders will decide about the modalities of the alliance with Congress for the upcoming municipal polls.

On the spat between two party leaders Sadashivrao Mandlik, MP and state School Education Minister Hassan Mushrif, the NCP leader said the issue will be resolved between the two by calling a meeting after his return from abroad.

North Korean ship sinks near China, 17 missing

BEIJING, Dec 26 (Reuters) A North Korean cargo ship sank off the northeast coast of China today leaving 17 missing, though eight others have been rescued, the official Chinese Xinhua news agency said. The maritime rescue centre at the coastal Chinese city of Dalian received a call mid-afternoon from another vessel saying that a ship had ''suddenly sunk'' one nautical mile ahead of it, the agency reported. Saddam loses death sentence appeal-govt official

BAGHDAD, Dec 26 (Reuters) An Iraqi appeals court ruled today that Saddam Hussein should be hanged for crimes against humanity, upholding a trial court's verdict and death sentence, Iraq's national security adviser told Reuters. Up to 500 killed in Lagos fuel blast

LAGOS, Dec 26 (Reuters) Up to 500 people were burned alive today when fuel from a vandalised pipeline exploded in Nigeria's largest city, Lagos, emergency workers said. Hundreds of residents of the Abule Egba district went to scoop fuel using plastic containers after thieves punctured the underground pipeline overnight to siphon fuel into a road tanker, locals said. Abiodun Orebiyi, secretary-general of the Nigerian Red Cross, said there was no official death toll but estimated.....
