Kerala announces Rs 100 crore for the tsunami affected

Alappad, Dec 26 (UNI) The Kerala government today announced a Rs 100 crore package for the tsunami-affected coastal region, including Rs one lakh each for tsunami-hit families.

The displaced families would receive Rs one lakh each and in four years about one lakh houses would be built in the affected areas, Chief Minister V S Achutanandan said while inaugurating the Social Security Scheme for tsunami victims here.

Stating that bank debts of tsunamis would be written off, the chief minister said the Maharashtra government had already sanctioned Rs 12 crore for carrying out relief works in the affected regions.

Mr Achutanandan also laid the foundation stone for the memorial to be built here for tsunami victims.

State Revenue Minister K P Rajendran, who was present said the government would investigate into the details of the NGOs, who had agreed to construct houses but backed out later.

SAD demands high level probe against Sainik Welfare Director

Chandigarh, Dec 26 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today condemned Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh for appointing Brig (retd) J S Jaswal, against whom a war widow has lodged a complaint of sexual harassment with the National Commission for Women, as Director, Sainik welfare. Gunmen kidnap trade ministry official in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Dec 26 (Reuters) Gunmen kidnapped a senior Trade Ministry official in Baghdad today after stopping his vehicle on his way to work, a ministry source said. Muhanad Ahmed Saleh, director of the Baghdad International Fair, was abducted by gunmen in two vehicles shortly after he left his home in Amiriya, a Sunni district in western Baghdad. No shots were fired. Baghdad is plagued by kidnappings. Many are political abductions by armed groups on either.....

Hasina deal with Bangladesh Islamists sparks criticism

DHAKA, Dec 26 (Reuters) Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has struck a deal with a radical Islamic group ahead of next month's parliamentary elections, a leader of the group confirmed today. But the agreement between Hasina's Awami League and Khelafat Majlis, considered a pro-Taliban movement with some of its leaders and activists allegedly trained in Afghanistan, has drawn widespread criticism for derailing Hasina's policy of secularism and stance against radicalism.
