Jasjeet fires nine-under 63 for opening round lead

Kolkata, Dec 26 (UNI) Jasjeet Singh dazzled with an opening round nine-under 63 at the Royal Challenge RCGC Cup which began at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here today.

A distant seven strokes behind the leader was the duo of last week's Goodricke East India Amateur Golf Championship winner Himmat Rai and thrice Sri-Lankan Amateur winner Simarjeet Singh.

Tied-fourth at a score of one-under 71, were Ranjit Singh and member of the Indian team at the Doha Asian Games Joseph Chakola.

Jasjeet was in exemplary form today. The Noida Golf Club golfer birdied the third and fourth, following it up with an eagle on the fifth and another birdie on the sixth thus making the turn at five-under.

On the way back, Jasjeet reeled off birdies on the tenth, 12th and 13th but dropped his only shot of the day on the 14th.

He, however, made up with birdies on the 15th and 16th and two pars later ended the day with a card of 63.

Powar and Kulkarni put Mumbai in commanding position against Gujarat

Mumbai, Dec 26 (UNI) Spinners Ramesh Powar and Nilesh Kulkarni struck telling blows at the fag end of the second day's play to leave Gujarat gasping at 118 for five in reply to the hosts 503 for seven declared at close of play on the second day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Elite division match at the Wankhede stadium here today. At close of play, opener Nilesh Modi was batting with 34 with Gujarat still.....

Bengal in driver's seat against Maharashtra in Ranji tie

Kolkata, Dec 26 (UNI) Bengal established a firm control over the match, reaching 199 for five today after destroying Maharashtra for 215 in the Ranji tie at the Eden Gardens. Bengal reached 199 for five with good starts from Arindam Das (37), Abhishek Jhunjhunwala(41) and A Chakraborty (27). But the players could not capitalise on the starts. Sanclecha claimed three wickets for 76 runs. At the end of the day Deep Dasgupta remained unbeaten on.....

Muabarak proposes easier terms for presidential bids

CAIRO, Dec 26 (Reuters) Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak asked parliament today to amend the constitution to make it easier for opposition parties to field presidential candidates. In a letter to parliament, read out by speaker Fathi Sorour, Mubarak also proposed a formal ban on parties based on religion -- a step which could enshrine in the constitution restrictions on the Muslim Brotherhood, the largest opposition force. Other changes would give more power to the prime.....
