BAGHDAD, Dec 26 (Reuters) An Iraqi appeals court examining the guilty verdict and death sentence against Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity is in ''intensive discussions'' about its ruling on the appeal, the court spokesman said today.
Spokesman Raed Jouhi said a decision was not expected today, but he said: ''Since Sunday, the court has been trying to put the final touches on a decision on the appeal. The judges are in intensive discussions.'' State television Iraqiya and US-backed Al Hurra television reported a decision could come within hours.
However, one of the prosecutors also said he did not expect a ruling to be announced today.
Saddam was sentenced to hang on November 5 for crimes against humanity over the killings of 148 Shi'ites from the town of Dujail after he escaped assassination there in 1982.
If the appeal fails, then Iraqi High Tribunal rules say the execution must follow a final decision within 30 days.
