Intel/K'taka Govt award for IT in education

Bangalore, Dec 26 (UNI) Intel India, along with the Karnataka Department of Educational Research and Training (DSERT), today honoured teachers, students and schools trained through the Intel Teach programme, a worldwide program designed to improve teaching and learning through effective integration of computer technology in classroom curricula.

DSERT, with support from Intel, recently conducted the third annual edition of the State-level competition on best use of technology in education and received over 450 entries from Government schools across the State. The 'Technology in Education Awards' recognise and reward teachers, students and schools who have successfully and innovatively integrated technology in education.

The recipients were 14 outstanding teachers, 14 student groups and seven schools. The awards, carrying a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each for teachers, Rs 10,000 each for schools and an education CD kit for students along with a joint citation from Intel Teach programme and DSERT, were spread over 13 districts of the State.

Speaking at the event, Shelly Esque, Worldwide Corporate Affairs Manager, Intel USA, said ''education is one of the key pillars of Intel's World Ahead Programme (WAP), which aims to enhance lives by accelerating access to uncompromised technology for everyone, anywhere in the world. Intel Teach programme plays a very active and crucial role in helping Intel realise its education goals for India''.

Intel, in a release here, said over 40 per cent of the entries came from rural Karnataka, bearing testimony to the growing success of the programme. With continued support from the State Government, Intel could make digital education a reality throughout the State.

In collaboration with DSERT, Intel, under the Intel Teach programme, had successfully completed professional development training for over 16,900 State Government teachers on the effective use of technology in teaching process. Intel regularly conducted refresher courses, enhancement workshops, technology workshops and seminars to sustain and promote ICT integration in Government schools.

Addressing the gathering, State Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj S Horatti thanked Intel for training a large number of teachers in the State under their Intel Teach programme.

It was evident from the teachers and students that the programme was not only empowering teachers to use technology, but also actively promoting development of critical thinking and key skills among students by adopting innovative methods like project-based and inquiry-based learning, he added.
