Andhra Cricket Association to stage ODI

Visakhapatnam, Dec 26 (UNI) Preparations for the one-day international cricket match between India and Sri Lanka at the Andhra Cricket Association-Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (ACA-VDCA) stadium here on February 17 next have commenced with an organising committee having been formed.

The commitee inspected the stadium today.

VUCA secretary K Parthasaradhi told UNI here the second tier of the stadium was being constructed to increase the present accommodation of 23,000 by another 10,000. The organising committee expressed its satisfaction over the pace of the work, which was expected to be completed by January 15, 2007.

He said there was a new press gallery proposed for 100 to 125 mediapersons on the north side.

Andhra Cricket Association secretary N Venkata Rao, president K V Rao, former president D V Subba Rao, joint secretaries of the committee visited the stadium and inspected the facilities. All arrangements for the ODI would be made according to the latest guidelines of the ICC and BCCI.

Parthasarathi said sale of tickets was expected to commence one week before the match and was likely to be done through e-seva.

The 14 corporate boxes in the stadium had already been booked.

Major quake hits off southern Taiwan

TAIPEI, Dec 26 (Reuters) A major earthquake struck southern Taiwan today, triggering a tsunami of up to one metre that could hit the Philippines, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of damage from southern Taiwan. The US Geological Survey said the quake, which occurred at, had a magnitude of 7.1 and occurred at a depth of 10 km. Thousands attend Myanmar rebel leader's funeral

MU AYE PU, Myanmar, Dec 26 (Reuters) Thousands of friends and some foes of Myanmar's ethnic Karen rebel movement paid their respects today at the funeral of veteran guerrilla leader Bo Mya, held along the Myanmar-Thai border.
