AEZ policy provisions to be changed to boost agri exports: Nath

New Delhi, Dec 26 (UNI) Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath today said plans were afoot to effect changes in the Agri-Economic Zone (AEZ) policy provisions to boost agricultural exports from the country.

Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) award ceremony here, he said he had urged the FIEO to look into this matter so that there could be value-addition to India's agricultural exports.

Stating that our farmers were in no way less than their foreign counterparts, he said, "Indian farmers need assistance and resources to be able to compete with farmers abroad." Currently, India processes two per cent of its agricultural produce compared to 30 per cent in Brazil, 70 per cent in the US and 82 per cent in Malaysia, according to official figures.

Regarding Special Economic Zones, the Minister said within the next year the SEZs would "emerge as the new engines of growth".

Rise in temperature keeps biting winters at bay

Lucknow, Dec 26 (UNI) A rise in temperature coupled with the sunshine in Uttar Pradesh has led to mild winter. Mercury hovered above normal in Jhansi and Lucknow divisions, the Met office told UNI here today. However, a slight plunge in night temperature was recorded in Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Kanpur and Faizabad divisions. Sultanpur at 5 degrees Celsius -- 4 degrees below normal -- was the coldest place in the state. The state capital recorded 7.6 degree.....

Boys outdo girls in class X exams in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 26 (UNI) Boys outshone girls in class X examination conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education, the results of which were declared here today. Giving details of the result, Directorate of School Education official Mohammad Shafi told UNI that as many as 35,834 students from the Kashmir division had appeared in the class X examination. Of them, 21,618 were declared successful as the overall pass percentage this year stood.....

Kerala announces Rs 100 crore for the tsunami affected

Alappad, Dec 26 (UNI) The Kerala government today announced a Rs 100 crore package for the tsunami-affected coastal region, including Rs one lakh each for tsunami-hit families. The displaced families would receive Rs one lakh each and in four years about one lakh houses would be built in the affected areas, Chief Minister V S Achutanandan said while inaugurating the Social Security Scheme for tsunami victims here.
