95 units put to seal by MCD today

New Delhi, Dec 26 (UNI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) today put to seal 95 units in Central, Civil Lines and Najafgarh zones.

Among the areas where the sealing took place were New Friends Colony in Central zone, Polo road in Civil Lines the area between Rohtak Road and Prem Sukh road in Najafgarh zone, an MCD spokesperson said.

Of the 95 units sealed today, 53 were in Central zone, 30 in Civil Lines and 12 in Najafgarh zone.

With today's sealing, the total number of units sealed since the resumption of the drive on November 8 on orders of the Supreme Court is 3553.

Dollar up against yen, steady against others

NEW YORK, Dec 26 (Reuters) The dollar strengthened against the yen, hitting two-month highs on Tuesday, on weak Japanese inflation and spending data, while the greenback remained flat against other major currencies in holiday-thinned trading. Many European financial markets are closed for the Boxing Day holiday. ''We don't really have major U.S. economic numbers today and London and Europe financial markets are still on holiday,'' said Alex Beuzelin, senior market analyst, at Ruesch International.....

Major quake hits off southern Taiwan

TAIPEI, Dec 26 (Reuters) A major earthquake struck southern Taiwan today, triggering a tsunami of up to one metre that could hit the Philippines, Japan's Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of damage from southern Taiwan. The US Geological Survey said the quake, which occurred at, had a magnitude of 7.1 and occurred at a depth of 10 km. The epicentre was off the Hengchun Peninsula on the island's southern tip and 90 km.....

Syria plans regional conference on Iraq -US senator

DAMASCUS, Dec 26 (Reuters) Syria is seeking to hold a conference grouping Iraqi factions to try to help stabilise its eastern neighbour, a US senator who has met President Bashar al-Assad said today. Assad opposed the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq but has been adopting a friendlier policy toward the Baghdad government.
