Security Council resolution on Iran shows Russia's interests: Lavr

Moscow, Dec 25 (UNI) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today said the new UN Security Council resolution on the Iranian nuclear programme fully reflected the economic interest of Moscow and other partners of Iran.

''The resolution called for finding a good balance of three objectives - to prevent the violation of the non-proliferation regime, maintain conditions for holding talks with Iran and prevent damage to any legitimate ties with Iran in various spheres,'' Mr Lavrov told President Vladimir Putin at a Cabinent meeting.

''The resolution is a compromise, of course, but all three objectives were reached,'' he said.

Mr Lavrov said all the contracts signed earlier with Iran would remain valid, including the project to construct an 800-million dollars light-water reactor at the Bushehr nuclear power plant and a contract on supplies of Russian missile defence systems Tor-M1 and S-300.

''The resolution contains a special provision that all contracts signed by the time the resolution was adopted will remain in force and will be implemented,'' he said.

UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution against Iran for refusing to suspend its nuclear programme on December 23, urging all countries to stop supplying Iran with nuclear technology and materials that could enable Tehran to proceed with its suspected nuclear weapons programme.

''The resolution calls on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment efforts until the International Atomic Energy Agency's concerns have been removed,'' Mr Lavrov said.

He said if Iran observed the resolution, the IAEA would temporarily abolish the ban and might restart negotiations.
